PIIC's approach to instructional coaching

Coaches assist teachers in classrooms with the PIIC core elements at the center:
  • One-on-one and small group support for teachers and other school leaders
  • Collecting and analyzing data to identify and address student needs and measure student progress
  • Evidence-based literacy practices across all content areas
  • Reflective and non-evaluative practice to determine what worked well

The B, D, A (before, during, and after) cycle of consultation and feedback is fundamental to the PIIC model. It is a cycle of communication, collaboration, confidentiality, and collective problem-solving. This three-pronged process offers the opportunity for coaches and teachers to work together to co-plan and co-design ways to enhance the students' literacy learning, to visit in classrooms and focus on a pre-determined set of goals and objectives, and to reflect about what worked well and if the goals and objectives for that lesson were met.

  • Before: The coach works one-on-one with the teacher to plan the focus of a visit and the data that the coach could possibly collect during the visit.
  • During: The coach actually visits the class and collects the agreed-upon data.
  • After: The coach meets with the teacher after the classroom visits to debrief the class lesson and to discuss the data collected and its implications for the planning of future lessons.
